Vol. 36 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Town Tenants.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that, owing to the delay in introducing the Bill dealing with the Report of the Town Tenants Commission, tenants whose leases have expired are being victimised by landlords forestalling any benefits which may accrue to such tenants from the passing into law of such legislation; and if he will state whether he will take action to prevent such mulcting of tenants or to prevent a stay of contemplated proceedings, or the carrying out of ejectments.

I have not any evidence of such victimisation as is alleged in the first part of the question. As regards the second part of the question, I have no power to interfere with the ordinary course of the law.

Has the attention of the Minister been called to the victimisation of the Barry family in Sligo; and, if so, will he undertake to see that some action is taken to prevent Mr. Andrew Barry and his family from being evicted from the houses built by his grandfather and father?

My attention was called about a fortnight ago to the particular case to which the Deputy refers by some inhabitants of the town of Sligo. As far as I know the facts of the case, the gentleman in question can avail himself of the existing town tenants legislation, so far as the licensed premises are concerned. As far as the town park is concerned, I do not see that any legislation can help him.
