Vol. 38 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dáil Loan Investors.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will send a representative into the South Mayo constituency, particularly the Westport and Achill districts, with a view to having the rights of claimants to the Dáil Loan, 1919-1920, established.

I had occasion, some two years ago, to consider very fully the question of investigating locally claims for repayment in respect of sums subscribed to the Dáil Eireann (Internal) Loan, 1919-20. I came finally to the conclusion, however, that any such arrangement would not be more helpful than the measures which are at present being taken to investigate claims. In the circumstances, I regret that I cannot see my way to adopt the Deputy's suggestion.

Can the Minister inform us what scheme there is for arriving at a correct conclusion as to the true investors in this locality? I would like to know that because of the peculiar circumstances. At the time the treasurer, Fr. Conroy, was very particular about the matter. He was so anxious, indeed, that he came up first with the money in order to ensure that the deposit would be safe and correct. He had at the time the intention of making a second journey with the list of names. If he had been arrested in those difficult times he was afraid that the money and names might be found on him together and by making separate journeys he realised he would evade any particular difficulty that might arise in the circumstances.

I am sure if the Deputy has any fresh particulars to submit in connection with this matter the Minister for Finance will be prepared to consider them. If the Deputy will indicate the position to the Minister for Finance the Minister will inform him what he is prepared to do.
