Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Primary Certificate Examinations.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of children eligible to enter for the Primary Certificate examinations in the years 1920 and 1930; the number of children who presented themselves for examination in each of these years, and the number who qualified in each respective year.

The Primary School Certificate scheme is intended for children who have completed at least the sixth standard course for National Schools, and the programme of examination is on the basis of that course. The examination is held towards the close of each school year in the month of June. The number of pupils enrolled in sixth and higher standards was 43,464 on 30th June, 1929; and 44,726 on 30th June, 1930. The number of pupils who presented themselves for the examination was 9,827 in 1929, and 10,007 in 1930. The number of pupils who qualified for the award of the Primary Certificate was 5,562 in 1929, and 7,427 in 1930.
