Vol. 39 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sanitation of Kerry School.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the present medical officer and his predecessor have repeatedly reported on the unsanitary condition of Rathmore (County Kerry) Boys' National School; that the site and aspect of the school have been condemned; that the school is a danger to the health of the 140 pupils and 4 teachers; and if he will now state when it is his intention to provide a suitable site and erect a school in keeping with the increasing population.

I can find no record in my Department of the receipt of a report from the medical officer with regard to the insanitary condition of the Rathmore school building, but the reports of the inspectors show that the premises are unsuitable and that a new school is required.

The Department has been for some time in communication with the manager on the matter, as the provision of a new school rests in the first place with the manager. It is also the manager who has to provide a site. In this instance the manager has intimated that a site has now been secured. The consideration of the question of its suitability and the completion of other necessary preliminaries in the case are being expedited as far as possible.

Mr. Crowley

Is the Minister aware that, regarding the sanitary conditions in the school, records of its condition are held by his colleague, the Minister for Local Government and Public Health?
