Vol. 39 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Bottle-Making Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the bottle-making industry in Saorstát Eireann has now ceased; and in view of this position, will the necessary steps be taken to remove the tariff and stamping charges which now amount, with the accompanying expenses, to about 90 per cent. on the cost price.

I recently informed a deputation that it would be two or three months before the future prospects of the bottle-making industry in the Saorstát could be ascertained, and that that period would have to elapse before the continuance of the existing tariff could be considered.

Stamping charges have no connection with the question whether bottle-making is carried on in this country or not. So long as the Order prescribing standard bottles is in force under the Intoxicating Liquor (General) Act, 1924, such bottles are a "measure" and require to be stamped in accordance with the Weights and Measures Acts.
