Vol. 39 No. 4

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariff on Bacon.

asked the President if the Executive Council have referred or intend to refer to the Tariff Commission the question of the imposition of a customs duty on bacon and other meat products.

The answer is in the negative. If there is a desire on the part of the persons engaged, or proposing to engage, in the production in Saorstát Eireann of bacon or other meat products to make a case for the imposition of a tariff on these commodities they can avail of the powers provided by Section 2 (1) of the Tariff Commission Act of 1926.

So far no application has at any time been made to the Minister for Finance for a duty on bacon or other meat products.

Do I understand the President to say that the Executive Council do not mean to move in the matter?

Is the President aware of the precarious position of the bacon industry in Limerick?

The question was to ask if the Executive Council have referred or intend to refer, and the answer is in the negative.
