Vol. 40 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rearrangement of Rundale Holdings in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what progress is being made towards the rearrangement of holdings held under the rundale system in the Carter Estate, Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

The estate of V.A.T. Shaen Carter referred to has been vested in the Land Commission under the provisions of the Land Act, 1931, and the tenants put on an annuity basis as from 1st May last. Arrangements will be made in due course for inspection of the estate with a view to the rearrangement of holdings and the settlement of various other matters.

There is a matter on this estate that I would like the Parliamentary Secretary to take cognisance of, and that is the fact that many of the tenants are not able to avail of the Gaeltacht Housing Grant owing to the position of their rundale holdings. If they built at present they would have to do so on mearings in some cases. It is a great hardship on the tenants not to be able to avail of the housing grants, and I would like if the Parliamentary Secretary could have an inspection of the estates made at the earliest possible moment.
