Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages Finances.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state as regards labourers' cottages (1) the total amount of loans borrowed from the Commissioners of Public Works, and the amount still outstanding; also, what is the total amount of the sinking fund accumulations on the loans whose period of redemption has not yet come, and the balance of loans now due if these accumulations be taken into consideration: (2) the total amount borrowed through the Irish Land Commission under the Labourers Act, 1906, and subsequent Acts, the amount of such loans redeemed and the balance still unredeemed; and (3) the annual sum now payable for loans under (1) and (2) respectively, and how much in each case is borne by the State, and how much falls on local authorities to be met by cottage rents and rates.

(1) The total amount of loans borrowed from the Commissioners of Public Works for the erection of labourers' cottages in Saorstát Eireann was £3,159,295. The amount at present outstanding is £1,899,552. (2) The total amount borrowed through the Irish Land Commission for the purposes of the Acts was £3,791,046, the amount redeemed was £395,025, and the balance unredeemed is £3,396,021. (3) The annual sum payable to (1) the Commissioners of Public Works on foot of loans advanced is £112,235 and (2) the Irish Land Commission is £123,209. Of these amounts £29,205 and £44,355 are paid by the State to the Commissioners of Public Works and the Irish Land Commission respectively. The balances, £83,030 and £78,854, are payable by the local authorities.
