Vol. 40 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clerical Officers' Examination.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in the case of any future examination for posts as Clerical Officers confined in the forthcoming examination to Shorthand Typists and Writing Assistants of seven years' standing, he will consider the advisability of extending the examination so as to include typists, in view of the fact that the latter have passed the same examination in literary subjects as the Shorthand Typists.

The question of admitting established typists to the limited competition for clerical officers to be held in January next has been considered. The first step in promotion for typists is to the shorthand typist grade, and typists have already the opportunity of obtaining such promotion by competing at either the open or limited competitions for that grade. Three competitions to enable typists to become shorthand typists have been held since 1924 and it is the intention to continue to hold these limited competitions in the future.

A typist who succeeds in obtaining advancement to the shorthand typing grade under these arrangements thus becomes eligible to compete for promotion to the clerical grade. For this purpose established service as a typist is allowed to reckon towards the qualifying period of seven years required from shorthand typists as a condition of eligibility for the clerical examination.
