Vol. 40 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariffs on Bacon.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the anticipated delay of a Tariff Commission report on bacon, and in view of the price of imported bacon being much below the cost of production, the Executive Council, in order to save the home industry, would apply the provisions of the Customs Duties (Provisional Imposition) Act.

The reactions of any too hasty procedure under the Customs Duties (Provisional Imposition) Act in anticipation of a report by the Tariff Commission in the case of such a commodity as bacon might be most injurious to the community and to an important export trade. Inquiries are proceeding as to whether any undue delay is to be expected in the examination by the Commission of the application already before it.

Has the Minister any information to give as to the result of such inquiries?

No, they are proceeding.
