Vol. 40 No. 21

Questions on the Adjournment.

With regard to the Adjournment Deputy Clery and Deputy Hogan have given notice that they wish to raise questions. It is Deputy Clery's intention to raise the subject matter of his question—not the Minister's refusal to answer.

Have you forgotten that I also gave notice to raise a question on the Adjournment?

The Deputy wants to raise Questions 10 and 11?

Question 10.

I am not sure that I understand Question 23 very well, but I am inclined to regard it as the best for the Adjournment on the ground that some action could be taken for people in occupation of lands who are paying certain alleged excessive rents. I think Deputy Hogan's question is more important on the face of it, but if there is agreement I shall take Deputy Clery's question to-night.

Mr. Hogan

Will I have any guarantee that it is not another Minister will have to deal with it when the question comes on again?

Will you, sir, decide now about Question No. 10?

I can only take one question on the Adjournment and generally we have agreement between Deputies as to which question will be taken. In default of agreement I have to make up my mind between three questions and I would take Question 23, although I do not know much about it, as having reference to an important matter where possibly injustice might be remedied. I will take Question No. 7 in default of agreement, and we will have to consider to-morrow what question we will take then.

Has it not been the practice in order to facilitate Deputies that you take one question one day and give an opportunity on a succeeding day if there is no more important business, to take the next question?

That is correct. I have only decided what will be taken to-day. Any Deputy who wants to have a question taken to-morrow must give notice to-morrow, and if, as the Deputy says, there is nothing more important in the way, that notice will be accepted. I could not decide the case until I know what will arise out of to-morrow's Order Paper.

I take it that you are not ruling it out, and that I can raise it to-morrow?

I am not ruling it out.
