Vol. 40 No. 21

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Work in Co. Tipperary.

(Tipperary) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give the report of the engineers on the Pollock lands, Birdhill, and if he will state the actual cost to date of work carried out on the new river and embankment in that area.

The effect of the engineers' reports is to show that prior to the construction of the Shannon works the Pollagh lands were subject to flooding in wet summer seasons. This flooding has been increased partly as the result of the diversion of the Kilmastulla river in connection with the Shannon works and partly owing to reconditioning, which has no connection with the Shannon works, on the upper reaches of that river. The engineers also report that the uncleaned condition of the drains on the Pollaghs has worsened the conditions there.

The actual cost of work carried out to date on the construction of embankments and drainage trenches for the protection of the Pollagh lands is £1,332 4s. 11d.
