Vol. 40 No. 22

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recent British Tariffs.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that as a result of the recent British tariffs, serious difficulties have arisen in connection with the dispatch of handkerchiefs and other embroidered linen goods to Great Britain and Northern Ireland; and what steps, if any, does the Minister propose to take, in order to remove this restriction on an important Free State industry.

I am aware that difficulties of the kind referred to by the Deputy have arisen. I have taken steps to have these difficulties removed, and so far as I am aware they have been practically surmounted. I am anxious, however, to issue a complete statement for the guidance of Free State exporters which will avert the possibility of any similar difficulties in the future. I am in communication with the British Customs authorities, and will issue the statement as soon as possible.

Will the Minister give instructions to the officials along the Border so that they may be in close touch with the latest developments and thus prevent further hardship?

I shall do that.
