Vol. 41 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - De-Rating of Agricultural Land.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state when proposals for legislation will be introduced to relieve county councils and urban district councils of the statutory obligations now existing to strike rates for the current year on agricultural land and thus give effect to the Government's undertaking to provide de-rating of agricultural land out of the retained land annuities.

It is not proposed to introduce legislation affecting the rates of the current year. County Councils have been advised to proceed with the making of the rates.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's answer, might I ask him if he is in a position to state if the Government has definitely abandoned the policy of de-rating agricultural land out of the retained annuities upon the faith of which undertaking the last General Election was fought and won by them or are we to take it that the policy of de-rating has been merely abandoned until such time as the Government finds itself again in Opposition?

I would require notice of that question.
