Vol. 41 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Resumption of a Woodford Holding.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state whether the Land Commission having obtained an order for the resumption of holding No. 57, estate of J.A. Lewis, Co. Galway: S. 1990 (in which holding James Dwyer, of Lowertown, Woodford, son of the late evicted tenant, was seeking re-instatement) declined to exercise their order unless James Dwyer bound himself in advance to pay an annuity of £9 0s. 6d. per year for the holding, and also bound himself to agree to certain undefined reservations regarding the turbary on the holding; and, if so, if he will state whether the Land Commission made the above stipulations before entering on the resumption proceedings.

The Land Commission have obtained an order for the resumption of the holding of Mr. William J. Farren at Alleendarra West on the Lewis estate and possession of the lands will be taken in due course. The terms on which they are prepared to offer the lands to Mr. James Dwyer are considered by them reasonable and in view of his definite refusal to accept their terms it has now been decided to dispose of the lands otherwise. It was not possible for the Land Commission to determine the conditions on which the holding would be resold until the amount of compensation to be awarded to Mr. Farren was fixed by the Judicial Commissioner. The turbary proposed to be reserved by the Land Commission is required for local needs and will leave an ample supply for the use of the holding.
