Vol. 41 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Lime Kilns.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is prepared to consider the giving of grants to enable disused lime kilns in County Wexford to be reopened so that there may be made available an adequate supply of lime for manurial purposes.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave on the 28th ultimo to a similar question by Deputy F. H. Crowley, in which I intimated that I was not satisfied that the provision of grants for the purpose would be the most effective method of securing the object in view, and that the matter was receiving my careful consideration.

Apart altogether from the question of grants, would the Minister consider the advisability of granting permission to those on whose lands lime kilns are situated to work these kilns? I understand that in some properties the former owners or landlords refuse to allow the people to work the kilns owing to the fact that the limestone is considered to be a mineral and that the former owners who claim these minerals refuse to have them worked.

I am not aware of that.
