Vol. 41 No. 10

Written Answers. - Flooded Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that considerable loss and damage is sustained by the farmers of the parishes of Claremorris, Knock and Killeaden through the flooding of the Gweston, Pollock and Yellow Rivers (tributaries of the River Moy), and that the Mayo County Council lodged petitions with the Commissioners for Public Works, under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, requesting the drainage of those rivers, and if he will state what steps are being taken to have those rivers drained.

A scheme was prepared for the drainage of the Gweestion, Pollagh and Yellow Rivers (tributaries of the Moy) and submitted on 25th April, 1927, to the Mayo County Council for a contribution. The Council agreed to make the required contribution on condition that the scheme should be carried out simultaneously with the proposed scheme for the River Moy but not sooner.

The County Council were not prepared to meet the contribution required from them for the carrying out of the original drainage scheme for the Moy River. A modified scheme for the drainage of portion only of the Moy was examined, and an approximate estimate of the contribution required was laid before the Council on 24th May, 1929. So far as the Commissioners are aware no decision has so far been reached to make the necessary contribution.

Unless the County Council withdraws the condition that the Gweestion, Pollagh and Yellow Rivers scheme should not be carried out sooner than the Moy scheme, no action can be taken by the Commissioners until the Council agrees to make the necessary contribution towards the cost of the Moy scheme.
