Vol. 44 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Subsidy to Beet Sugar Factory.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount of subsidy direct and indirect received by the Carlow Beet Sugar Factory per ton of sugar produced for the years 1929-30 and 1930-31, and if he can state the average wholesale price for F.O.R. Carlow for refined sugar in these years.

The amount received by the Carlow Beet Sugar Factory by way of direct and indirect subsidy on the sugar produced in the year 1929-30 was £16 18s. 8d. per ton and in the year 1930-31, £16 6s. 8d. per ton.

There is no information at my disposal which would enable me to answer the second part of the question.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would the Department of Industry and Commerce not be in a position to provide, say, an approximate figure in regard to the wholesale price of sugar at the railhead in Carlow in those years?

I am not in a position to say whether the Department of Industry and Commerce would or would not, but I suggest to the Deputy that he should put down a question. I have not the necessary information in my Department.
