Vol. 44 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - German Tariff on Herrings.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he has taken any steps to have the German tariff on Irish herrings reduced; and, if not, does he propose taking any such steps.

Representations have been made to the Government of the German Reich. It should however be understood that the German fishing industry, already in great distress, suffered particularly on the fall in the value of the pound the effect of which was to reduce the price of pickled herrings in Germany by 50%. The duty was increased for the purpose of aiding the home industry and I have been informed that there is very little hope of securing any alleviation at present. I understand that a similar answer has been returned to the representations made by other Governments.
