Vol. 45 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Allowance for the Poor.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the poor in rural districts entitled to free milk have in many instances to walk a double journey from 6 to 12 miles to the nearest village or town to get their milk, and if he is prepared to make arrangements with local farmers to supply the poor in their neighbourhood with their allowance of milk.

The arrangements for the supply of free milk are primarily the concern of the local public assistance authorities. So far as my information goes, I am satisfied that the distribution of the milk is being effected with the greatest possible consideration for the recipients and I am not aware that these arrangements have in any case given rise to a situation such as that suggested in the question. If any specific complaints in the matter have reached the Deputy he might represent the facts to the local authority concerned or to my Department, with the assurance from me that if there is reasonable cause of complaint in any instance the matter will be very fully investigated.
