Vol. 45 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Escallop Industry.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if his attention has been called to the hardship inflicted on the fishermen of West Cork engaged in the escallop and winkle industry by the tariff placed on same when exported to England and if a bounty will be paid by the Government to all fishermen affected to compensate them for the loss sustained.

This matter has already been examined and arrangements have been made for the Sea Fisheries Association to provide for the marketing of all shell-fish with a view to maintaining prices hitherto obtained by gatherers.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he is aware that the escallop industry, on which hundreds around Berehaven and Dunmanus bays are dependent for a livelihood, is in danger of extinction owing to the British tariffs imposed on such shell fish and whether as there is practically no home market for such shell fish he will at once grant a bounty on these exports to help the fishermen concerned to tide over the present dislocation of their business.

This matter has already been examined and arrangements have been made for the Sea Fisheries Association to provide for the marketing of all shell fish with a view to maintaining prices hitherto obtained by gatherers.
