Vol. 45 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Analysis of Registered Unemployed.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to give an analysis of the total number of persons registered as unemployed based on the new registration forms; and whether he will give a separate analysis of the increase of 11,171 in the numbers registered other than in the Ballina registration area during the three weeks ended 21st November.

I am not yet in a position to give the information which the Deputy desires.

Can the Minister tell us if there was anything abnormal in the increase of over 11,000 in the registered unemployed during the first three weeks of last month?

The position has been examined. There is some reason to believe that the figures are not reliable, and the whole system will be overhauled.

If it is found that the figures are not reliable will the money allocated on the basis of these figures be recovered by the Government?

If necessary. A check is instituted before any allocation is made.

If it is found that the figures are not reliable will the unemployment money allocated on the basis of the figures be recovered?

If the Deputy wants any further information he can put down another question.

Arising out of the answer, would the Minister undertake to circulate to the House the number of those employed in Ballina registration area? I think it would be an easier job than the other one.
