Vol. 46 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Attack on Omnibus.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that it is reported in the Press that at a meeting in Dublin on Tuesday, 21st February, 1933, a speaker stated that the men who rushed the Great Northern 'bus at Eden Quay on Monday, 20th February, when the 'bus was partially burned, were striking against the Imperialist junta in the North, and whether he will state what action he proposes to take regarding this incitement to violence and what steps he proposes to take to prevent a recurrence of such incitement.

I am replying to this question in the absence of the Minister for Justice, who is prevented by illness from attending the House.

My attention has been drawn to the newspaper report referred to by the Deputy. At the moment, inquiries are being pursued to see whether evidence is available that the words attributed to him were actually used by Mr. O'Donnell. If such evidence is forthcoming legal proceedings will be instituted.

I take this opportunity to warn all concerned that incitements to violence will not be tolerated. I desire also to draw the attention of the Press to the fact that the publication of reports of incitements to violence is in itself an offence against the law.

Will the President take into consideration, in view of the nature of this dispute and in view of the fact that the cost of such damage is liable to fall upon the City of Dublin, and upon other local authorities where such damage has taken place, the question of relieving these local authorities in cases where damage has been done?

That is a separate question.
