Vol. 46 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounties on Agricultural Exports.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount paid to 31st January, 1933, by way of bounties on agricultural products exported, and the various headings under which the amounts were paid.

The total amount paid to the 31st January, 1933, by way of bounties on agricultural products exported amounted to £815,994. I am circulating with the Official Report a statement showing the various headings under which the amount was paid.

It will be appreciated that, owing to the interval that must elapse between the receipt of claims for repayment and the making of payment thereon, the figure I have given does not represent the bounties paid on produce exported up to the 31st January. Claims for bounties for the export of butter and cream are paid about one month in arrear, while claims for bounty on the other agricultural products are paid about a fortnight in arrear.

The following is the information required:—Butter, cream, etc., £249,461; cattle, £349,836; live pigs, £23,649; pig products (bacon, pork, etc.,) £95,546; potatoes, £834; poultry, £92,105; eggs, £4,566. Total, £815,994.

I should like to ask the Minister if any complaints have been received in his office about the difficulty of these bounties reaching the persons for whom they were originally intended, namely the producer?

No complaint of that nature has been received in my office.

Does the Minister anticipate a continuance of about the same expenditure on bounties in future as at present?

I am not in a position to make a statement in regard to that.
