Vol. 46 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Rates Relief for Limerick.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if it is intended to make a contribution from public funds, as recommended by an Inspector of his Department, to the relief of rates of the Limerick County Borough Council in the coming financial year, 1933-4, in view of Limerick's unfair Poor Law system (as reported by the Inspector), and the greatly increased number of able-bodied persons in receipt of home assistance through unemployment, which is responsible for the big increase in the general rate of the city.

A contribution of the kind indicated could not legally be made. All matters affecting the financial position of the Council will receive due consideration if legislation be shown to be desirable on consideration of the Inspector's report and of the views of the local authorities thereon.
