Vol. 46 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drinagh (Wexford) Cement Works.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received a resolution from the Wexford County Council urging that the Government should take steps to have the cement works at Drinagh reopened, and if in view of the distress prevailing in this area amongst a large number of men who were previously employed there, he proposes to take any action in the matter.

I have received a number of representations from time to time as to the reopening of the cement works at Drinagh. The suitability of this site with others in the Saorstát is under consideration in connection with proposals for the manufacture in the Saorstát of all the cement required by the country.

In view of the fact that there is a large import of cement, will the Minister give an indication when it is likely a decision will be arrived at on the matter?

It is not unlikely that proposals for legislation affecting the cement industry will be submitted to the Dáil in the near future. The question of the suitability of particular sites will not arise for consideration until after that legislation is passed.
