Vol. 46 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Votes for Gárda Síochána.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is prepared to introduce proposals for legislation to repeal Section 5 of the Electoral Act, 1923, and so entitle members of the Gárda Síochána, who have reached the age of 21 years and who comply with the provisions of the prevailing electoral laws, to vote for members of Dáil Eireann.

The Government has not so far had an opportunity of considering the question of the repeal of Section 5 of the Electoral Act, 1923, with a view to conferring the franchise on members of the Gárda Síochána, and I am not, therefore, in a position to state whether proposals for legislation to repeal that section will be introduced.
