Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amount of Beer Brewed for Consumption in Irish Free State.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of (a) standard barrels and (b) bulk barrels of 32 gallons of beer brewed and retained for consumption in the Irish Free State during the year ended the 5th April, 1933, or the nearest date thereto.

The number of standard barrels (of 36 gallons at 1055º gravity) of beer brewed and retained for consumption in the Irish Free State during the year ended 31st March, 1933, was 519,996. The number of bulk barrels (of 32 gallons at any gravity) brewed and retained for consumption in the Irish Free State during that year has not yet been ascertained. Steps are being taken to obtain the necessary figures, and these will be communicated to the Deputy as early as possible.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of (a) standard and (b) bulk barrels of 32 gallons of beer of an original gravity of 10.42 or under brewed and retained for consumption in the Irish Free State during the year ended 5th April, 1933, or nearest date thereto.

The information sought by the Deputy is not at present available. Steps are being taken to have it obtained at the earliest possible date. As soon as the necessary figures are ready they will be communicated to the Deputy.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, could he give us the lowest figures available before the Finance Bill is introduced?

I could not guarantee that. It would mean that virtually every brewery in Ireland would have to be got into touch with and they would not have time to get the information.
