Vol. 48 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Personation at Elections.

asked the Minister for Justice whether any steps have been taken to trace people who induced persons to personate at the last general election; if he is aware that persons who were induced to personate, having been given other voters' numbers for this purpose, are now in prison; and if he will take steps to amend the law so that those who promote personation will be made accountable for their actions.

With regard to the first part of the question I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question upon the same subject on the 9th March last.

I am not aware that any persons who were induced to personate are at present in prison.

I do not consider that any amendment requires to be made in the existing law in order that persons who promote personation should be made accountable for their actions.

Will the Minister or some member of the Government take early steps to condemn the encouragement that has been given by a member of the House recently to the advisability of indulging in these illegal practices?

If I do not get a satisfactory reply I will, as some Deputies think fit to deal with this matter in a flippant way, give notice that I will raise the question on the adjournment motion to-night, in view of the fact that Dublin citizens have been advised by a member in the House here to indulge in these illegal practices.
