Vol. 49 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cross-Channel Contractors and Workmen's Compensation Acts Awards.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that very grave hardships are being inflicted on Free State citizens by the refusal of cross-Channel contracting firms carrying out contracts in this country to recognise the decisions of Saorstát courts in cases of awards under the Workmen's Compensation Acts, and if he will state what steps, if any, he proposes to take to remedy such grievance.

My attention has been drawn recently to one case of this kind in which it was stated that the English firm liable to pay compensation discontinued payment as soon as it had finished its contract here.

As Minister for Justice I am not, of course, in a position to see that awards of our courts are enforced in other countries, but my Department is consulting with the Department of External Affairs and the Department of Industry and Commerce with a view to remedying the position.
