Vol. 49 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turf.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in view of his statement in the Dáil on Tuesday, 11th July, with reference to the price of turf, he will state (1) the value of the turf itself; and (2) the costs of saving and delivery free on rail.

Dr. Ryan

The figure of 11/6 is an average figure which, in my opinion, is calculated to afford on the whole a reasonable price to turf producers. I would remind the Deputy that it is not practicable to work out detailed costings which would show accurately the cost of raw material, wages, transport, etc. It will be appreciated that each of these elements must necessarily vary according to the condition and location of the bog, the transport facilities available, the rates of wages paid and other factors. Under these circumstances there is nothing to be gained by attempting to show the costs in detail, particularly in view of the fact that in most cases accounts are not kept in a manner which would facilitate such calculations.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, might I ask why, in the event of what he states to-day being correct, was I informed, when a similar question was put down on the 11th July, that the calculation referred to in this question had been made; and, in the event of it having been made, why will not the Minister communicate the figures to the House?

I wish to press for an answer in that connection. I was informed on the previous occasion that the calculation had been made, and all I ask is that this calculation should be communicated to the House. It is very necessary, if those who desire to promote the scheme are to have a fair chance of doing so, that these figures should be made available.

Would the Minister say what is the cost of saving turf as distinct from the cost of transport?

Dr. Ryan

As the Minister explained in his reply, it depends on the district, the transport facilities, and so on.

What is the 11/6? Is that the price at the bog or where?

Dr. Ryan

That is the price on delivery at the nearest railway station.

The Minister for Defence stated in this House that we might fairly pay a man £2 10s. a week for saving turf in carrying out this scheme. It is with the view of ascertaining whether or not that can be done that I put down this question.

Dr. Ryan

Yes, I believe so.
