Vol. 49 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Imported Publications.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) the total value, and (2) the total duty paid on dutiable newspapers and periodicals imported into Saorstát Eireann at Dun Laoghaire and North Wall respectively (a) from the date of the first imposition of the duty in May, 1932, to the 28th May, 1933, and (b) from the 29th May, 1933, to the 28th August, 1933.

Separate aggregate records of the imports of newspapers and periodicals at North Wall and Dun Laoghaire are not compiled, and the information could only be furnished in the form requested by an expenditure of time and labour which does not appear to be justified. The figures indicating the total gross value and the total gross duty paid on newspapers and periodicals imported at Dublin Port (including Dun Laoghaire) are as follows:—

Period.

Gross Value.

Gross Duty.

12th May, 1932, to 28th May, 1933

£58,331

£24,892

29th May, 1933, to 28th August, 1933

£30,783

£15,271

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would he see, if the dates in the Question do not happen to be the dates on which particulars were furnished to his Department, that both are supplied when giving the particulars?

There is the difficulty of getting out separate figures for Dun Laoghaire and the North Wall. I have given the aggregate imports on both dates.
