Vol. 49 No. 14

Public Services (Temporary Economies) Bill, 1933. - Message from the Seanad.

Seanad Eireann insists on amendments 1 and 4 made by it to the Public Services (Temporary Economies) Bill, 1933, to which Dáil Eireann has disagreed, it agrees to the amendment made by Dáil Eireann to the Bill in lieu of amendment 2.

It is proposed to ask the Dáil to agree with the Seanad on amendments 1 and 4 made by it to the Public Services (Temporary Economies) Bill, 1933, to which Dáil Eireann had disagreed. The Seanad agrees to the amendment made by Dáil Eireann to the Bill in view of amendment 2. If there is no objection, I propose that agreement should be given now.

I object. It is too important a matter and we should have a discussion on it either to-morrow or some other day. Can the Minister suggest what day it could be taken?

Before proceeding, I wish to say that this is the second time that Deputy Dillon has intervened to point to the Leas-Cheann Comhairle as having given a wrong direction from the Chair. I wish to know from you, sir, if this kind of statement with reference to an officer of this House is to be allowed.

The Chair did not hear the Deputy refer to the Leas-Cheann Comhairle.

I made no remark.

The Deputy pointed deliberately across the floor of the House at me. Is that kind of thing or that attitude of mind by a Deputy towards an officer of this House going to be allowed to continue?

The Chair did not see the action referred to; but such action would be reprehensible.

I do not know, sir, what action you purport to rebuke me for.

I said if such action had taken place it would not be orderly.

The Chair does not state that I was guilty of any action deserving of censure.

The Deputy, on another occasion, cast aspersions on the way I put a certain matter from the Chair. Deputy Dillon pointed at me in reference to a remark concerning a certain action. If the Deputy says he did not intend it in that way I accept his statement but I know that he deliberately pointed across the floor at me in connection with an officer of the House having given an irregular direction.

I take it that the Deputy had no such intention and the matter should end there.
