Vol. 50 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reafforestation in Co. Donegal.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what steps he proposes to take to carry out reafforestation in County Donegal.

Up to date, the area acquired for State afforestation in County Donegal is 1,208 acres, of which 496 acres have already been planted. A considerable number of offers from land owners in the county to sell additional lands are under consideration at the moment. State afforestation is not organised on a county basis, and the matter of acquiring and planting land in County Donegal is dealt with exactly as in other counties. It is the practice to acquire suitable blocks of land with the funds available wherever they are offered at reasonable terms. The whole question of large scale expansion of reafforestation throughout the State is at present being examined but it will be some time yet before the plans for such expansion are fully formulated.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say when the last acquisition of land for afforestation took place in Donegal?

That is a separate question.

The Minister has stated that 1,000 odd acres of land had been acquired in Donegal for afforestation. I want to know if, in fact, these lands have been in the hands of the Forestry Department for more than two years and that, in fact, no acquisition of land has taken place in Donegal during the period for which the Parliamentary Secretary is responsible. Would he inform us if, during his period in the Land Commission, no land has been acquired in Donegal or no progress has been made with the acquisition of land in Donegal with a view to the extending forestry? I will put down a question for the Minister later.
