Vol. 50 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sites of Industrial Alcohol Factories.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether any specific consideration has been given by his Department to Donegal, one of the principal potato growing counties of the Saorstát, as a site for one of the proposed industrial alcohol factories; and, if so, with what result.

Dr. Ryan

The claims of Donegal for the establishment of distilleries for the manufacture of industrial alcohol from potatoes have not been overlooked. The first experimental distilleries will probably be situated in the counties of Louth, Cavan and Monaghan, but as soon as the results of the working of these distilleries are available, and if the results justify extension, Donegal, it may be taken, will be one of the first areas in which the industry will be established.

Why not Donegal first?

When does the Minister hope to have spirit produced by any of these factories? What is the approximate date?

Dr. Ryan

It is hoped to have the experimental factories ready to deal with the coming year's potato crop.
