Vol. 51 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounties on Shellfish.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if in view of the fact that the export of periwinkles and escallops is likely to continue for some weeks yet to come, he will consider the advisability of extending the period of payment of bounties on same from 31st March to 30th April.

The arrangement as to payment of a bounty on these shellfish was advisedly limited in the first instance to the financial year, and I do not propose to extend the period of operation on this occasion. If the scheme is to be renewed next season modified arrangements may be found practicable.

The trouble is, as the Parliamentary Secretary will appreciate, that coming up to the end of this month there will be a great quantity of these fish exported, and they may not be in time to strike the market on the 31st. If they left the country before the 31st, I suppose the bounty would be extended?
