Vol. 51 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Moneys Withheld by British Government.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state for the financial years 1932/3, 1933/4 and 1934/5, respectively, (a) the amount of the moneys withheld or to be withheld by the Saorstát Government from Great Britain, and (b) the amount of any payments withheld or to be withheld by the British Government from the Saorstát.

The amounts withheld from the British Government on the grounds that they were not due by the Saorstát Government for the financial years 1932/3 and 1933/4 were £4,764,767 and £4,906,859 respectively and, on the same basis, the estimated figure in respect of the financial year 1934/35 is £4,842,810.

Deductions made by the British Postal administration from the periodical remittances to the Saorstát Post Office in respect of Post Office (Pre-Treaty) Pensions and Annuities under the Telegraph Acts, 1892 to 1921, amounted to £56,007 in 1932/3 and £53,608 in 1933/4. The estimated deduction in respect of the year 1934/5 is £49,583. Liability for these services is disputed and accounts containing such deductions have been accepted without prejudice.
