Vol. 51 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The National Anthem.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that children in the primary schools are growing up without a knowledge of the National Anthem and if he will take steps to enforce henceforth the teaching of the words and music of the anthem in all schools under his control.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of the 25th July last to a somewhat similar question of his. I am not aware that the position in national schools is as the Deputy suggests, and I do not propose to take action on the lines indicated.

I take it that the Minister does not intend to make it compulsory in the national schools that children are to know their own anthem?
