Vol. 51 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Housing.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (1) how many applications for housing grants in West Cork under the Gaeltacht housing scheme have been received; (2) how many houses have been completed or are in course of completion; (3) how many are held up for want of funds, and (4) what prospect is there of completing the whole of the scheme with the applications received and approved of.

Applications are not at present classified under West Cork as distinct from the remainder of the county, and undue labour would be involved in segregating applications from that portion of the county.

(1) The number of applications received under the Housing (Gaeltacht) Acts from the County of Cork is 1,829.

(2) 364 houses have been completed or are in course of construction.

(3) No applications which have been sanctioned are being held up for want of funds.

(4) Usually 12 months is required for the completion of a house in County Cork, and it may be taken that the majority of the applications sanctioned will be completed within that time.

In regard to applications not yet sanctioned, preference is given to those emanating from the Fíor-Ghaeltacht, and as there is very little Fíor-Ghaeltacht in West Cork, I am unable to say when it will be possible to dispose of all applications from that area.
