Vol. 53 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharged From Army.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he will state the period of service given (a) in the Army; and (b) in the Army reserve by Mr. Thomas Burke, Findrum, Convoy, County Donegal; his character in the Army, and the date upon which he would normally be due for discharge from the reserve; and whether he will state if he is aware that Mr. Burke was discharged from the reserve on the 10th May last, and if he will state the reasons for such discharge.

Thomas Burke had six years 186 days Army and five years 86 days reserve service. His character in the Army was assessed as "Very Good." He would normally have been due for discharge on the 12th February, 1935. He was discharged on the 10th May last for the reason that his services were no longer required.

Will the Minister say whether there was any other reason for dispensing with this man's services except that he did not belong to the particular Party to which the Minister belongs?

That was not the reason.

What other reason is there?

That was not the reason.

Will the Minister say what other reason there is or can be for discharging a man from the Army reserve who had given that long service in the Army and in the reserve and with a very good character?

I have informed the Deputy of the reason.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he will state the period of service given in the Officers' Training Corps by Mr. Herbert Joseph O'Sullivan, University College, Cork, No. 533, his character in the Army, and the date upon which he would normally be due for discharge from the Officers' Training Corps, and whether he will state if he is aware that Mr. O'Sullivan was discharged from the Officers' Training Corps on the 19th May last, and if he will state the reasons for such discharge.

Mr. O'Sullivan served in the Officers' Training Corps from the 30th November, 1932, to the 19th May, 1934, on which date he was discharged for the reason that his services were no longer required. His character whilst serving was assessed as "very good." He would normally have been discharged on the 29th November, 1936.

Will the Minister say whether there was any other reason for the discharge of Mr. O'Sullivan from the Officers' Training Corps except that he did not belong to the political Party to which the Minister belongs?

That was not the reason.
