I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £200 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1935, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí na bhFundúireachtaí Eolaíochta agus Ealadhan agus Ildeontaisí-i-gCabhair, etc.

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £200 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1935, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Institutions of Science and Art and sundry Grants-in-Aid, etc.

This Estimate is required to provide a Grant-in-Aid of £200 towards the expenses of the Committee for Quaternary Research in Ireland. The Committee which has charge of this work is acting as a National Sub-Commission of the International Commission for the Study of Fossil Man, and its members include prominent archæologists, geologists and botanists in Dublin and Belfast. The research work, which will extend over the entire country, is expected to occupy a period of three years, and will include study of the geology, palæobotany, zoology and archæology of the recent deposits and an investigation of the growth and stratification of peat bogs in Ireland. The work will be under the general supervision of Professor Knud Jessen and of Mr. Jonassen, who are Danish experts in the subject, with whom will be associated students selected from University College, Dublin, and Dublin University. Professor Jessen has kindly offered to give the associated students general training in his own laboratories in Copenhagen.

The Committee for Quaternary Research has obtained £100 from local Irish sources towards the expenses of the investigation. One half of this sum has been granted by various scientific bodies, and the other half has been raised by private subscription. In addition, a contribution of £100 has been obtained from a Danish fund which is available for International Research. Grants are being given by University College, Dublin, and Dublin University to meet the expenses of students to be selected for training in Copenhagen in connection with the scheme. It may be anticipated in connection with this Vote that applications will also be forthcoming for State assistance towards the expenses of the Research in the second and third years.
