Vol. 53 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounties on Periwinkles.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the fact that the trade in periwinkles is an all-year-round industry with a great many poor people on our coast, he will consider the advisability of removing the time limits within which bounties will be paid on the export of periwinkles and continue to pay the present rate of export bounty as long as periwinkles are subject to tariff in the English market.

Dr. Ryan

The question of continuing the payment of the export bounty on periwinkles is at present under consideration.

I understood from the Minister when the question of a bounty was raised that this was looked upon as a sort of seasonal trade, the same as that for oysters. I should like to point out to the Minister that the trade in periwinkles goes on the whole year round. There is no limit to it, and there is no close season for them. This is a matter of very great concern to many poor people who live along the coast.

Dr. Ryan

It is not strictly seasonal.
