Vol. 54 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Dublin Bus Companies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of bus companies operating in the City of Dublin which have been acquired by the Dublin United Tramways Co. up to the 31st October, 1934; the total number of persons employed by these companies at the time of acquisition; the total number of these employees who have found employment in the Dublin United Tramways Company; the total number of such employees who have found alternative employment through the labour exchanges; and the total number of such redundant employees who have not yet been able to find alternative employment; and if he will say what steps his Department is taking to assist those persons to get suitable employment.

The total number of omnibus companies acquired by the Dublin United Tramways Company up to the 31st October, 1934, was 23. The total number of persons employed by these companies at the time of acquisition was, I understand, 705, of whom 598 have found employment with the Dublin United Tramways Company.

Of the remaining 107 I have no information as to the extent to which alternative employment has been found by these persons, but I am informed that 27 did not seek employment with the Tramways Company.

Of the 80 persons not employed by the Dublin United Tramways Company, eight were rejected on grounds of age; three were young boys, and 29 who had been employed for only a few weeks prior to acquisition were placed on the panels for consideration as vacancies arise. Twenty-six persons were rejected on medical grounds, and the balance of 14 persons were rejected on grounds of general unsuitability.
