Vol. 54 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Upkeep of Donegal Road.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will make a grant to the Donegal County Council for the purpose of putting the main road from Gweedore to Burtonport in a state of repair in view of the statement of the County Surveyor for County Donegal to the Donegal County Council that this road was in a gravely unsatisfactory condition and could not be properly maintained unless radical repairs were first carried out.

Out of a total of £17,622 allowed for improvement of main roads in County Donegal out of the current year's Improvement Grant, a sum of approximately £3,311 has been allowed for this road, which is only about 13 miles in length. A sum of £2,500 is being spent on the improvement of the portion between a point half a mile beyond Gweedore and Crolly Bridge and the balance, £811, is being spent near Kincasslagh. Having regard to the urgent needs of other roads in County Donegal and in other counties, a further grant from the Road Fund could not be allocated to the road in question during the current financial year. I may add, however, that I regard this as an interesting and important road and its welfare will not be lost sight of.
