Vol. 54 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of County Galway Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire the Daly Estate at Curraneena, Hillswood, and Carrarea in the Kilconnell district County Galway, for distribution amongst congests and landless men, and if so, what steps have so far been taken, and what stage the acquisition or resumption proceedings have reached, or if he can state by what date these lands will be in the possession of the Irish Land Commission.

There are two separate Daly Estates in the districts referred to by the Deputy. The lands at Hillswood are the property of Denis St. George Daly; they comprise some 50 acres of cutaway bog and inferior turbary, and the Land Commission, having had them inspected, decided not to take action towards acquisition. The other estate appears to be that of Denis Bowes Daly and comprises lands at Carrowrevagh, Bookeen South and other townlands. The Land Commission have received a report on some 439 acres of these lands and the question of acquisition is under consideration. At the present stage it is not possible to say whether or not the lands will be acquired.
