Vol. 54 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Cavan.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the growing unemployment in County Cavan, due partly to the depression in agriculture and the closing of factories in the County, he will take steps to make an equitable arrangement whereby alternative employment shall be provided in the new factories being started elsewhere for periodical quotas of eligible workers from the County.

Employment in privately-owned factories is not subject to regulation by me in respect of the districts from which the workers to be employed are to be selected.

Is the Minister aware that in Cavan at the present time there are cases of exceptional hardship that cannot get qualification certificates? There is a case under appeal at present and yet nothing has been done. Is the Minister aware also that there are factories closing down in Cavan while factories are being opened elsewhere? As an instance, is he aware that the factory which supplied him with shovel handles, and which he gave at the last election as an election present, is now closed? I could give him several instances, but that is one in particular.

Question No. 9.

I notice the Minister has not answered the supplementary question of Deputy McGovern. I should like to ask him is he going to answer the supplementary question of Deputy McGovern, and further——

The Ceann Comhairle called the next question.

The Minister for Finance has one job. Does he want another? By way of supplementary question, I desire to inquire whether the Minister is going to answer Deputy McGovern's supplementary question, and whether he will further inform the House——

On a point of order. Have you, Sir, called the next question?

——and if the Minister can further inform the House whether amongst the many factories in County Cavan there is at least one factory the entire personnel of which consists of one man?

That is a Blueshirt factory, is it not?

The supplementary question is not relevant.
