Vol. 54 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increases in Departmental Staffs.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the numbers of those added (since 1st April, 1932, up to the latest date for which returns are available) to each of the following:—(a) the Department of the Revenue Commissioners; (b) the Gárda Síochána; (c) the Department of Industry and Commerce, (1) unemployment assistance and unemployment insurance, (2) all other branches; (d) Department of Agriculture, (1) cattle inspectors, (2) all other branches; and if he will state further the total sums expended in payment of salary and bonus in respect of each of the above categories.

The available returns of Civil Service staffs give particulars only of those serving on the first working day of each calendar year and the latest figures available are accordingly those for the 1st January, 1934. The numbers of staffs added in each of the Civil Service categories mentioned in the Question between the 1st January, 1932, and the 1st January, 1934, are as follows:—

Revenue Commissioners

226

Industry and Commerce:

Unemployment Assistance and Unemployment Insurance

156

In the Branches of the Department of Agriculture, excluding the Inspectorate, the increase was 31.

In the Branches of the Department of Industry and Commerce other than those mentioned there was a decrease in the number of staff.

In the period in question there was no class in the Department of Agriculture with the title of Cattle Inspector. Live stock was only one of a number of services on which the Inspectorate as a whole was employed. In the total Inspectorate there was a decrease in number in the period.

The form of the existing returns would not enable the cost of the numbers added to be stated. Such information could be worked out, but its ascertainment would involve a considerable amount of labour.

The Deputy's Question in so far as it relates to the Gárda Síochána should be addressed to the Minister for Justice.
