Vol. 54 No. 11

Private Business. - Public Dance Halls Bill, 1934—From the Seanad.

Would it be possible to dispose of the Seanad amendments to this Bill before taking Private Deputies' business? This afternoon Deputy Mulcahy stated that if it was mentioned at the conclusion of public business he would probably approve of the proposal.

I suggested that we should put it at the end of public business or take it to-morrow. I did not know who was to deal with it, but it might easily be left over until to-morrow.

I can, but I understood from the Deputy then that if it was mentioned later he would be disposed to allow the Bill to go through. The amendments define dances which are open to the public.

I would like to listen to the Minister, but no one anticipated that the Minister would ask to have this Bill taken after 9 o'clock.

The Deputy requested me, when I asked the Dáil to take it this afternoon, to mention it at the end of public business, and I am reminding the Deputy of that now.

Public business is not over yet. I do not like the Minister to have a grievance against me or to have a grievance about being disappointed in any way. As you, Sir, were in the Chair, I submit that it was hardly anticipated that we would be asked to take this question in Private Deputies' time.

The record will show.

The Chair understood that if public business had concluded before 9 o'clock that Bill might be taken. That was my interpretation of Deputy Mulcahy's remarks.

That was not my interpretation.
