Vol. 54 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty on Spare Parts of Sellar's Ploughs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a number of farmers in the Edgeworthstown district have "Sellar's Ploughs" and that the imposition of duties on the spare parts and the refusal to grant a remission of the duty or to grant a licence to import, duty free, these parts is imposing a great hardship on those farmers and that his refusal means a number of valuable ploughs are useless to their owners, and if steps will be taken to rectify the matter.

I am not aware that the position is as stated in the question. I understand that parts for Sellar's ploughs, as well as other types of ploughs, are satisfactorily manufactured in the Saorstát and that there should not be any difficulty in obtaining spare parts.

Without wishing to cast any reflection whatever upon the Irish manufacturers, the parts manufactured by Irish manufacturers for these particular ploughs do not fit. It is absolutely essential that parts that will fit properly should be available for this particular type of plough. I know representations have been made to the Minister through his Department on this matter and I will ask him to consider those representations carefully in relation to this particular type of plough.

We will have representation made to the manufacturers.
