Vol. 55 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turbary Allotment on Galway Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if representations have been made to him concerning turbary for the tenants on the Benjamin Morrow Estate—Record No. S3633—near Glenamaddy, County Galway, and if he will state what steps he proposes to take to fulfil the promises given to those tenants when signing their purchase agreements that allotments would be made to them out of the turbary on the estate.

Representations have been received by the Land Commission that a number of tenants on the estate of Benjamin Morrow, County Galway, Record No. S3633, are in need of a turbary supply. The matter is at present under consideration by the Land Commission and is being dealt with by them as expeditiously as possible.

The Land Commission have no knowledge of the promises stated to have been made that turbary allotments would be provided for the tenants.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is one tenant there named Smith who holds 20 acres of that bog and that he is letting and selling his turbary rights to outsiders? Is he also aware that the bog, which really belongs to the estate, is being cut away by other people? Might I ask is it because this man is the local secretary of Fianna Fáil that he is permitted to do that?
